BRITISH TEENAGER SETS ANTI-FGM CAMPAIGN

A female teenager in UK is initiating her campaign against female genital mutilation.

Fahma Mohamed, 17, has managed to gather 150,000 signatures on her online campaign fighting FGM by the coming ‘cutting season” on this summer.


She has sought meeting UK Education Minister Michael Gove for stating her cause fighting FGM through awareness raising among teachers and parents.


Fahma has based her campaign o Change.org and she has also tweeted Prime Minister David Cameron on the issue.


Following the campaign, the government of Scotland has initiated writing to headteachers to make sure parents and teachers are familiar with FGM and its consequences.


FGM is illegal in UK since 1985, but there are 66,000 victims of FGM in England and Wales and 24,000 under 15 at risk every year.


The campaign has soon become known as one of UK’s most high profile campaigns and Fahma has won the support of many organizations including Integrate Bristol, fighting FGM.
